United States: The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday strongly condemned Russia's annexation of parts of Ukraine, sending a "clear message" to Moscow, according to US President Joe Biden.

The resolution condemns "the organization by the Russian Federation of so-called referendums within Ukraine's internationally recognized borders" and the "attempted illegal occupation" of the four territories, which President Vladimir Putin announced last month.

All UN and international organizations are urged to reject any border changes announced by Russia, and Moscow is forced to "immediately and unconditionally reverse" its actions.

According to Biden in a White House statement, the vote showed Russia that it "cannot wipe a sovereign state off the map."

The statement said Russia is "tearing down the foundations of international peace and security" by challenging the fundamental principles of the UN Charter. "The world has responded with a clear message that the stakes of this conflict are clear to all."

US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield called on all countries to send a message that the world "will not tolerate the forced occupation of neighbour's land."

"Today, Russia is occupying Ukraine. But tomorrow another country's territory can be invaded. You can be one. You can come forward. What would you expect from this room, he asked.

Before the vote, Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, told the General Assembly that the resolution was "politically and openly provocative" and that it could "destroy any and all efforts in favor of a diplomatic solution to the crisis."

According to China's deputy UN ambassador Geng Shuang, China did not vote on the resolution on Wednesday because it did not think it would be beneficial.

Whatever action the General Assembly took, he said, "must be conducive to de-escalating the situation, to an early resumption of negotiations, and to promoting a political solution to this crisis."

South Africa, an emerging US partner with a long history of close ties with Russia, and in particular India, which was also absent on the Security Council, where it holds a temporary seat, were targets of the particular US effort.

Senegal, Bangladesh and Iraq - all of which voted against Russia in March - all supported the resolution on Wednesday. While Nicaragua, under increasing international pressure on human rights, switched from voting "no", joining only Russia, Belarus, North Korea and Syria, to one of the world's most closed states, Eritrea, voting "no". to diet.

South Africa's representative, Mathu Joyini, said: "South Africa regards the territorial integrity of the states and Ukraine as sacred and we reject all actions that undermine the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and international law."

We avoided the proposal because, according to him, "the goal of this gathering should always be to contribute to a constructive outcome conducive to the establishment of lasting peace in Ukraine."

India's representative Ruchira Kamboj claimed that "pressing issues" were not addressed in the resolution and that the war resulted in "considerable collateral damage to the entire Global South".

Bangladesh, explaining its decision to condemn Russia, urged the international community to oppose any attempt by Israel to annex the currently occupied Palestinian territories.
