NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Telecom Department's proposal to hold a spectrum auction, in which successful bidders will be assigned spectrum to provide 5G services to the general public and enterprises.

A total of 72097.85 MHz of spectrum will be auctioned off by the end of July 2022, with a 20-year validity period. Spectrum in the Low (600 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz), Mid (3300 MHz), and High (26 GHz) frequency ranges will be auctioned.

Telecom Service Providers are projected to use the Mid and High band spectrum to roll out 5G technology-based services capable of providing speeds and capacities that are around 10 times better than what is now possible with 4G services.

The Cabinet announced a number of progressive options for bidders to purchase spectrum through the upcoming spectrum for facilitating ease of doing business.
