SRINAGAR: The Congress and some other political parties are often lied to by the last Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, Hari Singh, about the inclusion of his state in India. In fact, it is often argued by the Congress that Maharaja Hari Singh did not want to join India until Pakistan invaded Jammu and Kashmir. Through this argument, the Congressmen try to hide the hatred of the first PM Jawaharlal Nehru towards Maharaja Hari Singh and his undying love for Sheikh Abdullah. Let us tell you that the confrontation between Maharaja Hari Singh and Sheikh Abdullah is an important link in Indian history.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has once again reiterated the same argument. Jairam Ramesh once again sparked a debate on the issue in the process of attacking PM Narendra Modi, which was answered by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju with facts. In a series of tweets, Jairam Ramesh targeted PM Modi and said, "The PM has once again hidden the real history. He ignores the following facts just to criticise Nehru on Jammu and Kashmir. All this is well mentioned in Rajmohan Gandhi's biography of Sardar Patel. These facts are also known to PM Modi's new person in Jammu and Kashmir.'' Jairam Ramesh, while making the first argument, wrote, 'Maharaja Hari Singh was dilly-dallying in merging with India. He had dreams of independence, but when Pakistan attacked, Hari Singh joined India." Jairam said in the next point, 'Sheikh Abdullah supported accession to India because of his friendship with Nehru and respect for Gandhi.' The Congress leader next argued that, until 13 September 1947, when the Nawab of Junagadh joined Pakistan, Sardar Patel was not concerned about Jammu and Kashmir joining Pakistan.

This tweet of Congress leader Jairam Ramesh was refuted by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju with facts and on this issue, he also made several tweets and references to it Rijiju tweeted, "This 'historic lie' that Maharaja Hari Singh had shelved the offer of Kashmir's accession to India has gone long enough to hide the dubious role of Jawaharlal Nehru. I myself quote Nehru to expose Jairam Ramesh's lies.'

The Union Minister further wrote that 'On 24 July 1952 (after agreement with Sheikh Abdullah) Nehru himself told this in the Lok Sabha. For the first time a month before independence, Maharaja Hari Singh approached Nehru to join India. It was Nehru who had reprimanded the Maharaja.' Revealing the propaganda of Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, Rijiju presented the fact that, 'Here it is said in Nehru's own words that it was not Maharaja Hari Singh who delayed the accession of Kashmir to India but to do so. It was Nehru himself. The Maharaja, like all other princely states, had contacted Nehru in July 1947 itself. The proposal of other states was accepted, but the proposal to include Kashmir in India was rejected.

Addressing Jairam Ramesh, the Union Minister further said that, 'Nehru not only rejected the request of Maharaja Hari Singh's merger in July 1947, but Nehru also declined on this issue in October 1947. This happened when the Pakistani invaders had reached within a kilometre radius of Srinagar. This is also recorded in Nehru's own words.' The Union Minister wrote that 'The basics are: 1) Maharaja wanted to join India in July 1947 itself. 2) It was Nehru who rejected Hari Singh's request. 3) Nehru conjured up some 'special' case for Kashmir & wanted 'much more' than mere accession. What was that special case? Vote Bank politics?

Rijiju questioned Nehru's style of functioning and asked Jairam Ramesh, 'Why did Nehru make Kashmir the only exception, where the princely rulers wanted to merge with India and yet Nehru wanted 'much more?' What was that much? The truth is that India is still paying the price for Nehru's stupidity.

Let us tell you that the Congress, which ruled the country for so many years, has been saying till now that the Kashmir problem has arisen because of Hari Singh, the then Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir. It has always been the argument of the Congress and its leaders that Maharaja Hari Singh did not want the merger of Jammu and Kashmir with India, rather he wanted to remain independent. Congress leaders have been saying that Hari Singh had offered to join India when Pakistan attacked Jammu and Kashmir. Congress National General Secretary Jairam Ramesh also resorted to this propaganda to hide Nehru's mistakes. However, the Union Minister himself exposed Jairam Ramesh's propaganda by projecting Nehru's words.
