Lucknow: UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has changed the name of many cities and town in the state and now Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik informed Chief Minister that he received a demand to change the name of Sultanpur to 'Kushbhawanpur'.
In the letter to CMth, the UP Governor said he met a delegation on March 25 which came up with the demand to rename the UP town to “its erstwhile name from the era of Hindu Ram”. The delegation told Naik that name of 'Kushbhawanpur' is derived from the name of son of Hindu God Lord Ram.

If the government changes the name Sultanpur will become the third town in UP which will be renamed after Allahabad and Faizabad. The Election Model of Conduct prohibits the government to announce any new policy measures. But it seems unclear whether renaming a town would fall under the purview.

Last year, Yogi Adityanath led government found itself in a controversy after it changed the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj and Faizabad to Ayodhya –prompting many on Twitter to lampoon Adityanath’s move. The opposition alleged that the move was politically motivated to systematically erase the Mughal history and legacy of India. In 2018, the Indian government approved changing the names of 25 towns and village across the country.
