Lamborghini has yet again created another record with its Urus SUV, recording the fastest time at the Pikes Peak International hill climb in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. It is an updated version of the SUV, which is set to be revealed by the Italian marque later this month.

The 2023 Lamborghini Urus with its camouflage livery took on the timed attack, starting at an altitude of 2862 metres and climbing to 4302 metres across a 20-kilometre track with 156 turns. This was blasted past by the Urus in just 10 mins 32 seconds, about 17 seconds faster than the Bentley Bentayga which held the previous record for SUVs. The Urus did not compete in the official race event but was timed by the official timekeepers of Pikes Peak.

Speaking on the Urus’ record run, Rouven Mohr, Automobili Lamborghini Chief Technical Officer said, “Pikes Peak is the most famous Hillclimb event in the world, as well as being extremely challenging for the car: the uneven track layout tests the chassis’ balance; the significant altitude differences stress the powertrain, and the weather conditions can change very rapidly between start to finish.”

As per the information shared by Lamborghini, the Urus is powered by the standard Twin-Turbo V8. Other than this, certain modifications had to be made to the car for it to be eligible for the Pikes Peak hill climb, like a roll cage in the rear, a six-point racing harness with race sets and a fire extinguishing system.

Pirelli provided the 22-inch Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres with 285/40 and 325/35 sections, which are also the first semi-slick tyres developed to be used on SUVs, with a special collaboration with Lamborghini for the Urus tyres. The tyres are more versatile and perform better on hot dry tarmac and on wet surfaces with colder temperatures alike.

The 2023 Lamborghini Urus now faces greater competition than before from cars like the Aston Martin DBX, Maserati Levante, Alfa Romeo Stelvio and the upcoming SUV from Ferrari, the Purosangue.
