Washington: In a television interview on Wednesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis stated that if elected president, he would aim to abolish the Internal Revenue Service, the Departments of Energy, Commerce, and Education.

In response to a question from Fox News host Martha MacCallum about which agencies he would eliminate while in office, he stated, "We would do Education, we would do Commerce, we'd do Energy, and we'd do IRS." We will be able to reduce the size and scope of government if Congress cooperates with me in doing that.

In the past, some senior Republicans have demanded the elimination of those departments. Conservatives have targeted the Department of Education in particular, and former President Donald Trump has also called for its elimination.

Early on in the Republican presidential primary, DeSantis supported abolishing significant federal agencies, which emphasises how important it is to his campaign that the federal bureaucracy be drastically reduced.

He frequently charges large segments of the government with political bias against conservatives and has pledged to make significant personnel changes if elected. He had previously expressed support for getting rid of the IRS.

In polls, the governor of Florida has consistently lagged behind Trump, but his level of support is higher than that of the rest of the Republican field. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted between June 9 and 12, about 43% of Republicans supported Trump, while only 22% backed DeSantis.
