Wahsington; According to House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on Saturday, the US is arming Ukraine in a way that prevents a significant escalation.

Sullivan stated during a press conference on the sidelines of the G7 summit in the Japanese city of Hiroshima that President Joe Biden's "core precept... is that we are going to do everything we can to support Ukraine in its defence of its sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Washington is "going to proceed in a way that avoids World War Three — that precept has remained intact," he said, adding that this aid will be given while avoiding war in the third place.

There were several inquiries during the press conference regarding the potential supply of F-16 fighters to Kiev. Biden informed the G7 leaders on Friday that the US would help the UK, Netherlands, and other European nations train Ukrainian pilots to operate US-made aircraft.

We will work with our allies to decide when, who, and how many planes will be delivered as the training takes place over the next few months, Sullivan said.

The senior official was questioned about the shift in the Biden administration's position on the issue after the US had previously rejected Ukraine's demand for F-16s.

According to him, Washington is supplying the Ukrainian military with the tools that "are necessary at a given point in time."

Sullivan claimed that while Kiev was preparing for spring and summer offensive operations, the warplanes were not necessary. But now, "we've reached a moment where it is time to look down the road and to say, 'What is Ukraine going to need as part of a future force to be able to deter and defend against Russian aggression as we go forward?'," he added.

The F-16 fighter jets, according to Sullivan, were "part of that mix." Any upcoming delivery of the planes to Ukraine would not conflict "with the basic proposition that the US is not enabling or supporting attacks on Russian territory," he insisted.

After meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky in Hiroshima over the weekend, Biden was anticipated to announce a new $375 million military aid package for Kiev, according to Politico on Friday. According to US and Ukrainian officials, it will include more artillery shells, armoured vehicles, and anti-tank weapons.

Moscow has repeatedly denounced the US and its allies' arming of Ukraine, saying that doing so only serves to prolong the conflict and increase the possibility of what it terms a proxy war being waged by the West. Additionally, according to the Kremlin, the supplies raise the possibility of a direct conflict between Russia and NATO
