Washington: The American Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has called the Citizenship Amendment bill a dangerous turn in the wrong direction. The Commission has asked the US government that if this bill is passed in both the Houses of Parliament, then consideration should be given to the imposition of US sanctions against Home Minister Amit Shah. In its statement issued on December 9, the USCIRF said that it is deeply concerned with the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha.

The USCIRF stated in its statement that the "Citizenship Amendment bill is a dangerous turn in the wrong direction. This is in the opposite direction of the Indian Constitution and the rich Indian history of religious pluralism." On 9 December, the Citizenship Amendment Bill was introduced by Shah in the lower house of Parliament, where it was passed with the support of 311 members. 80 members voted against this bill. Now this bill will be introduced in Rajya Sabha.
