COLOMBO: A senior US delegation consisting of representatives from the Departments of State and Treasury will go to the island nation on Sunday to assist in resolving the ongoing economic crisis there.

During their visit, the delegation, which also includes Deputy Assistant Secretaries of the Treasury for Asia Robert Kaproth and Kelly Keiderling, will meet with politicians, economists, and members of international organisations.

The US Embassy in Colombo issued a statement saying that the delegation would "examine the most effective ways for the US to support Sri Lankans in need, Sri Lankans working to overcome the current economic crisis, and Sri Lankans planning for a sustainable and inclusive economy for the future."

The US ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, stated that "this visit shows our continuous commitment to the security and prosperity of the Sri Lankan people." "Our efforts to encourage economic growth and enhance democratic institutions have never been more vital," she said. "Sri Lankans are facing some of the worst economic problems in their history.

The US has announced USD120 million in new funding for Sri Lankan small and medium-sized businesses over the past two weeks, and also USD27 million in support for the island's dairy industry and USD5.75 million in humanitarian aid for those most severely affected by the country's worst-ever economic crisis.
