WASHINGTON: After a 27-year absence during which China and other U.S. adversaries made substantial inroads in the Indian Ocean islands, the United States has restored its embassy in the Seychelles. After announcing plans to establish its own such station above the Arctic Circle in northern Norway, the U.S. State Department made the announcement late on June 1.

In a bid to offset China's expanding influence in the Indo-Pacific, the Seychelles Embassy has been established. The United States has opened or announced intentions to open embassies in the Pacific, including in the Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Kiribati, and is currently building an embassy in the Maldives.

After the end of  the Cold War, the U.S. Embassy in Victoria, the capital of the Seychelles, was closed in 1996 as part of cost-cutting efforts. Diplomats located in Mauritius had been in charge of American interests in the 115-island archipelago 1,500 kilometres (800 miles) east of the continent of Africa.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated in a statement that "the time is right to elevate the relationship so that together we can better address shared challenges and take advantage of mutually beneficial opportunities." He declared that the U.S. would concentrate its efforts there on tackling transnational crime and corruption as well as economic development, climate change, and marine security.

Blinken said that "our shared pursuit of peace, democracy, and prosperity will be a beacon throughout Africa and the Indian Ocean region."
