WASHINGTON: Following the invasion of Ukraine, US President Joe Biden's top economic adviser urged India against cooperating too closely with Russia, BBC said.

"Our message to the Indian government is that moving toward a more explicit strategic alignment with Russia will have significant and long-term costs and implications for them," White House National Economic Council Director Brian Deese told reporters. "There are certainly areas where both China and India's decisions in the context of the invasion have disappointed us," he continued.

India has declined to impose sanctions on Russia, as have other countries.

The country, which the US regards as a counterweight to China's dominance in Asia, is the largest buyer of Russian weapons. It comes after US Deputy National Security Adviser Daleep Singh visited India last week for an official visit.

After Singh returned this week, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, "What Daleep did make clear to his counterparts during this visit was that we don't believe it's in India's interest to accelerate or increase imports of Russian energy and other commodities."
