Social Media has become the part of the daily life. But apart from bringing people closer it also affects greatly to our mental health. When you look at the lives of other people on social media, you compare your life to theirs, without even realizing. Another thing that you do not realize is that all that could just be a pretence for their social media accounts, and in fact their lives must be much worse than they let you see. This constant need to look and be perfect and have a life other people envy can be really bad for your mental health. The use of social media is directly linked with the depression, loneliness and anxiety.

Depression

According to study, the number of teenagers with depressive symptoms increased by 33 per cent from 2010 to 2015, the same time that smartphones were on a high in terms of their market with teenage kids. The suicide rate among young girls also rose by 65 per cent. A link was established between the depressive symptoms, suicidal tendencies, and the use of smartphones. People who are too active on social media are also observed to not be able to interact with people socially, face to face.

Loneliness

The more time people spend on social media, the lesser time they will have to spend with their family and friends in the real world. Reseacher found a link between perceived isolation that leads to loneliness, and social media use was established and also the new age phenomenon – FOMO, fear of missing out, was invented where people fear that they will miss out on some part of their lives, while they are living one.

Anxiety

People with social anxiety might find it easier to interact with people over the internet, but the long-term effects of overuse of social media, and dependence on it can be bad. When people suffer from anxiety, they have a constant fear of what will others think about them, and social media only takes it to new levels.
