USA: When it comes to chat products, Reddit has a poor track record. The company likely stated that this is the reason why its new chat product differs from its earlier releases. So what exactly is Reddit's newest feature?

Users can chat inside subreddits, which are known as "chat channels." The feature is currently being tested by the platform on a few subreddits.

Reddit has tested group messaging in subreddits before, so this is not a new experiment. Subreddit chatrooms were introduced by the company in 2018. However, it was discontinued in 2020 because it never became well-known.

It's likely that the platform was hoping the new feature wouldn't turn out to be identical. In addition to the standard commenting system, the company wants to give users more channels for communication.

Chat channels are designated areas within a subreddit where people can connect, ask questions, or simply hang out, according to Reddit. Users will be able to discuss anything in these dedicated areas within subreddits.

These posts won't be temporary. With the help of 25 volunteer subreddits, the company is currently testing the feature. There are fewer than 100,000 residents in the communities.

The extensive involvement of moderators or mods in chat channels is one of the things Reddit claims it is doing differently. These channels will be administered by moderators.

They have the power to restrict channel access, block comments, and control the chat queue. The mods will also have their own channel to discuss "mod-things among fellow mods," according to Reddit.

Depending on the outcomes of the testing, Reddit intends to add more features to chat channels. Automod rules, slow mode, and the development of unique channel roles are a few of them. The platform is accepting applications from subreddit moderators.

Do you think that some features on other platforms are similar to chat channels? If so, you are not mistaken. On Telegram and Discord, there are spaces that are comparable. In actuality, a number of Reddit communities make use of third-party real-time chat services like Discord or Telegram.

The company would want users to stay on Reddit itself with the new feature.
