USIBC Proposes Trade and Innovation Plan to Trump Administration

Washington, District of Columbia: Just three days before the inauguration, the US-India Business Council (USIBC) unveiled a comprehensive set of recommendations on January 16 for the incoming Trump administration. These suggestions aim to establish a framework for mutual trade, innovation-led growth, and secure supply chains to benefit both countries.

The report, titled "Together We Win," highlights actionable steps for Washington and New Delhi to strengthen their economic, technological, and commercial ties.

According to a USIBC statement, the recommendations emphasize key areas for collaboration, including trade, technology, energy, defense, supply chain management, infrastructure, and financial markets.

"The US-India partnership has reached unprecedented levels, driven by shared values and mutual economic interests," said Retired Ambassador Atul Keshap, president of USIBC. He added, "Our recommendations provide a roadmap for reciprocal trade, innovation-led progress, and secure supply chains, which will benefit businesses and citizens in both nations."

Key Suggestions from the USIBC:

Boost Trade Through Sector-Specific Deals:

USIBC advocates for flexible trade agreements focused on specific sectors to unlock billions of dollars in economic opportunities.

AI and Quantum Technology Collaboration:

The organization encourages joint research and the establishment of ethical frameworks to enable leadership in artificial intelligence and quantum technologies.

Streamline STEM Visas:

A fast-track visa program for STEM professionals is recommended to facilitate a seamless exchange of expertise between the two nations.

Energy Security:

USIBC emphasizes enhancing trade in crude oil, LNG, nuclear energy, and essential minerals to secure long-term energy needs.

Strengthen Critical Supply Chains:

Recommendations include creating secure production corridors for pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and medical supplies.

Modernize Defense Collaboration:

The council supports the deployment of advanced defense systems to strengthen deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region.

Protect Intellectual Property:

Launching an Intellectual Property Protection Incubator is suggested to safeguard innovation and creative work.

Fast-Track Infrastructure Projects:

Accelerating large-scale projects worth over $1 billion is proposed to stimulate growth and investment.

Simplify Investment Regulations:

Reducing bureaucratic hurdles is highlighted as a way to accelerate the flow of capital.

Vision for the Future

The USIBC also proposes the creation of a US-India trade council, a digital services agreement, and a supply chain resilience initiative (SCRI). These initiatives aim to address existing challenges while positioning both nations as leaders in global trade, technology, and innovation.

"The U.S. and India are at a crucial juncture with the opportunity to set global benchmarks in technology, trade, and security," Keshap stated. He concluded, "As USIBC marks its 50th anniversary, we remain dedicated to fostering this partnership through innovation and collaboration to ensure a bright future for both countries and their people."
