Lucknow: State CM Yogi Adityanath has given a big gift to the people of Uttar Pradesh ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. He has announced a 50 per cent concession in electricity bills to farmers in the state. This will put an additional burden of about Rs 1,000 crore on UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) every year. For this, the Government will give grants to the UPPCL.

According to the chief minister's office, CM Yogi has announced this exemption in the current rate of electricity for private tube wells. The existing rate of electricity will be revised as soon as the grant is received from the Government. This will reduce the charge from Rs.2 per unit to Rs.1 per unit in metered connections in rural areas, while the fixed charge will be reduced from Rs.70 to Rs.35. On the other hand, the fixed charge on meterless electricity connections will come down from Rs 170 to Rs 85. While energy-saving pumps had to pay a fixed charge of Rs 70 at 1.65 units earlier, it will now come down to Rs 35 at 0.83 paise per unit after this new announcement. 6 per unit to Rs.3 per unit in private tube wells in cities. CM Yogi's announcement will directly benefit 13 lakh people of the state.

A few days ago, Samajwadi Party (SP) national president and former CM Akhilesh Yadav and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal had also promised 300-300 units of free power in the state. Though the issue of how practical it is to provide free electricity in a big state like Uttar Pradesh is a matter of debate, CM Yogi has given a big relief to the people of the state by cutting it for the time being.
