Lucknow: Police have arrested a youth in connection with the vandalism of a Shiva temple in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. This temple is present near the Rasalganj outpost of the Bannadevi police station area. More than half a dozen statues were dismembered here late on Sunday (28 August 2022). Aligarh Police has confirmed the arrest.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kalanidhi Naithani has informed that a 25-year-old youth has been arrested late on Sunday night for damaging the idols by entering the Shiva temple. He has been identified from the CCTV footage. In some reports, the arrested youth has been identified as Mohammad Azad. He has been sent behind bars after registering a case under sections 452, 427, 307 and 295 of IPC.
After getting information about the incident, BJP leader and former mayor Shakuntala Bharti also reached the spot. He said 'Efforts are being made to spoil the atmosphere of the city by carrying out incidents of vandalism in the temple. This is the third such incident that happened recently. As part of the conspiracy, the idol of the temple are being broken.' According to media reports, after the arrest of the youth, local people told that he is mentally ill. However, so far there is no official confirmation that the accused is mentally ill. At the same time, angry Hindu organizations protested against the vandalism in the temple and demanded strict action.
