Khandwa: In a shocking incident, a 18-year-old woman at Khandwa,  Madhya Pradesh is striving hard for life after a man slit her throat in an alleged case of one-sided love on Monday. The accused village watchman is absconding, said police.

Superintendent of Police, Civil Lines, Khandwa, Mr. Vivek Singh on Tuesday said the accused, Bablu, aged 24, who is the Kotwar or the village watchman, was still at large.

According to the victim's sister, both of them were at home when Bablu showed up and made the victim demand to marry him. He used a sharp weapon to slit the woman's throat when she refused, then fled. Their father claimed that he and the accused had bumped into each other several times while the latter smoked marijuana and engaged in eve-teasing.

"The defendant cut her throat after she declined his offer. Despite having had surgery, her condition is still serious. Although the offender has not yet been apprehended, our team is working hard, Mr. Singh said.

The incident took place amid the national outrage over a similar case in Jharkhand’s Dumka where a girl died after a man set a girl ablaze. As evidenced by the recently released National Crime Records Bureau numbers for 2021, the opposition Congress has also been critical of the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led Bharatiya Janata Party government in Madhya Pradesh for the rise in crime against women and children.
