New Delhi: The Government of India has announced the appointment of Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi as the incoming Vice Chief of Naval Staff. Currently serving as the head of the Indian Navy's Western Command in Mumbai, Vice Admiral Tripathi is slated to assume his new role on January 4, 2024. The outgoing Vice Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral SJ Singh, is set to take over as the new Western Naval Commander.

Vice Admiral Tripathi brings a wealth of experience to his new position, having held various esteemed roles, including Chief of Personnel at the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Navy). An alumnus of Sainik School Rewa and the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, he joined the Indian Navy in July 1985. Specializing in Communication and Electronic Warfare, Tripathi has served in key roles on frontline warships, such as Signal Communication Officer and Electronic Warfare Officer. 

His command assignments include Indian naval ships Vinash, Kirch, and Trishul. Tripathi has also held crucial operational and staff appointments, serving as Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet in Mumbai, Director of Naval Operations, Principal Director Network Centric Operations, and Principal Director Naval Plans in New Delhi. Promoted to Rear Admiral, he served as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Policy and Plans) at IHQ MoD(N) and later as the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet. In June 2019, Vice Admiral Tripathi was promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral, assuming the role of Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala, Kerala. From July 2020 to May 2021, he served as the Director General of Naval Operations, navigating the Navy through heightened maritime activities despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

A graduate of Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Vice Admiral Tripathi received the Thimmaiya Medal. He also completed the Naval Higher Command Course and Naval Command College at the US Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island in 2007-08, earning the prestigious Robert E Bateman International Prize. Vice Admiral Tripathi is married to Mrs. Shashi Tripathi, an artist and homemaker, and the couple has one son, who is a practicing lawyer.
