The administration had taken such action in 2020 citing encroachments around the lake before taking this step. At that time, about 2,400 families were removed and their homes demolished. All these people were provided alternative accommodation in slum clearance board projects. According to media reports, corporation sources said that the administration took action against the temples to free the Muthanankulam dam from all encroachments. Earlier, people were shifted from nearby areas in view of law and order situation.
Heavy police force was reportedly deployed at the spot during the operation, which was to be carried out on the protesters. Some reports suggest that 150 people were arrested for protesting, while others say 250 people were caught. The collapse of Hindu temples has angered Hindutva organisations. One of his leaders, KC Dhanpal, said, "While we were demanding the corporation to provide an alternative place for worshipping the idols, the Kumarasamy Municipal Corporation started demolishing the temples at 6 am." On the other hand, people are also questioning the administration by sharing pictures of mazar near the railway station. They ask why they are not dealt with. People claim that there is a joke in the middle at Prayagraj railway station.
