AMBEDKAR NAGAR: Allegations of police misconduct have been raised in response to a video depicting UP cops abusing and assaulting women with lathis.

The women allegedly threw stones at the police and their vehicles, forcing them to use "minor force," police said, who have refuted the claims.

The video, which is currently trending on social media, is from Jalalpur in the Ambedkar Nagar area.

Women who were protesting the recent damage to a statue of B.R. Ambedkar in the area were targeted by the police. A dispute over the property where the statue is located was sparked by the protests.

On Sunday, a group of ladies were demonstrating there when the cops showed up to scatter them. Some of the demonstrators reportedly began throwing stones at the police, according to the police.

In a another video, some women can be seen grabbing at the hair of female police officers.

Ajit Kumar Sinha, a policeman in Ambedkar Nagar, said, "Some protesters also damaged and vandalised a police car during the commotion. When the incident became out of control, the police were forced to use minimal force."
