Today i.e. 1st April is the birthday of Virendra Singh, known as Goonga Pehelwan. Virendra Singh is the only Indian player to win a gold medal in the Deaflympics (Olympics for the deaf and dumb). He has also won 5 medals in other international competitions along with gold medals in the 2005 and 2013 Olympics.

For your information, let us tell that they are the only silent-deaf wrestlers who wrestle with normal wrestlers and also win. Virender, who has been wrestling since the age of 10, has been trained with famous wrestler Sushil Kumar. His goal is to play in the 2016 Rio Olympics, but the federation is not allowing him because of his inability to speak and listen. For this, he has written a letter to the Sports Ministry.

Step into wrestling like this

As a child, Virendra was sitting in the courtyard of his house when his relatives coming from outside saw that he had shingles in his leg. He brought him to Delhi to be treated for the same, from where his wrestling started. However, Virendra says that he loved Pahlavani from the nearby arena. In this arena, his father Ajit Singh also used to take initiative.
