New Delhi: After a person dies by accident, suicide, or unnatural death, the family's grief increases when they see the body of themself after the post mortem. The post-mortem has a body of incisions. To avoid this, all India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has decided to do virtual autopsy wherever possible. The facility was inaugurated on Saturday by Dr. Balram Bhargava, Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Virtual autopsy involves examining internal organs, tissues, and bones without touching the carcass. Under this procedure, the carcass is packed in a bag and placed in the CT scan machine. In no time thousands of images of internal organs are captured, which can be analyzed by forensic experts. Dr. Sudhir Gupta, professor and head of the Department of Forensic Medicine at AIIMS, said AIIMS will be the first hospital in South and South-East Asia to provide this facility. Developed countries such as Switzerland, the US, and the UK have already adopted imaging technology for post-mortem in select cases.

AIIMS has about 3,000 cases of postmortem every year. Dr. Gupta said that 30 to 50 percent of these cases do not require incisions. These include deaths due to accidents, executions, or suicide. He said that in many cases, there is no need to cut the body and make an option to find out the cause of death and one virtual autopsy is sufficient.
