Aamir Khan, who is called Mr. Perfectionist of Hindi cinema, is determined to revive the story of a film he left behind 15 years ago. He has recently registered the titles of film titled Mr. Mehta and Mrs. Singh in the Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association (Impa). Both these titles have been registered for 2 languages Hindi and English. This project was to start about 15 years ago under the direction of Vishal Bhardwaj in which Aamir Khan and lead actress Kareena Kapoor were chosen as lead actors.

Aamir Khan withdrew from this project and after that, the film was also discontinued. Rani Mukerji was director Vishal Bhardwaj's first choice in the film. He later chose Kareena Kapoor Khan. Mr. Mehta & Mrs. Singh film was made as a romantic comedy but the director wanted to do something different with it. He wanted to show Kareena and Aamir aging in this film, as can be seen in Lal Singh Chaddha. The shooting of the film was scheduled to begin in 2006, but things did not go well and the film went into cold storage before the shooting started.
