Geneva: World Health Organization (WHO) leading scientist Dr. Soumya Swaminathan has expressed apprehension that new waves of corona virus may also occur in India and efforts against the epidemic in the next 6-18 months will be crucial. He also said it will depend on many things like changes in the virus and effective vaccine ability against new variants. Many things are changing. In an interview, he advised on things like corona conditions, vaccination, use of medicines in the country.
Dr. Soumya Swaminathan said that the B1.617 variant of the virus found for the first time in India is one-and-a-half or two times more contagious than the original strain of covid. He said this strain is even more contagious than the B.117 variant of corona (first found in the UK). He further said, "B1.617 variants are also divided into two different trains, which are witnessing different types of mutations. We're still waiting for more results. I have not seen any data that suggests it is more serious".
Dr. Swaminathan said that according to our information, vaccines in India are still very effective against the new strain. He said, "It is well known that even after taking both doses of the vaccine, some people got infected and perhaps even had to be admitted to the hospital". He further added, "There is no doubt that such cases will come to light because no vaccine can provide 100 per cent protection. But a large population taking two doses will avoid the serious risk of infection. We believe the vaccine is still able to give strong protection to people".
