Former PM and Janata Dal (Secular) supremo HD Deve Gowda today reiterated his support to the Congress party in the ongoing general elections. The former PM, whose party JD(S) is in coalition with the Congress in Karnataka, further said that the election results will clear the political picture of the country.

Gowda’s statement comes after his son and Karnataka CM said that his party is ready to support Congress president Rahul Gandhi for the PM post.

"We are with Congress; I do not want to speak anything more. On May 23, results will come, a clear picture will be known to the entire country, and what further development takes place," said Deve Gowda.

Meanwhile, Kumaraswamy further claimed that the Congress-JD(S) alliance will win 18 to 19 Lok Sabha seats in the state. The Karnataka CM gave this statement when he was on a personal visit to Tirupati Balaji temple with his father.

Of the 28 parliamentary constituencies in Karnataka, Congress and JD-S contested on 21 and 7 seats, respectively.

Gowda had earlier said that regional parties cannot form the government at the Centre without the support from the grand old party. While Deve Gowda contested from Tumkur his grandsons Prajwal and Nikhil contested from Hassan and Mandya.

Recently, Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) leader and grandson of BR Ambedkar, Prakash Ambedkar called Deve Gowda a “dark horse” and claimed that he could emerge as the prime ministerial candidate after the elections.

In the 2014 elections, the BJP and Congress won 6 seats each out of these and JD-S 2. The state went to polls in two phases on April 18 and 23 respectively and the average voter turnout was 68 per cent.

Counting of votes will begin on May 23.
