Dibrugarh: Dibrugarh Police on Sunday recovered a mortar shell near Bokpara Chariali located on the bypass in Dibrugarh. Dibrugarh Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP-headquarters) said, "We have recovered mortar shells from the bypass in Dibrugarh. We have started investigation into the matter." During a routine morning walk, a local man spotted a mortal shell, causing panic among the people of the area. The mortal who had made the people of the area panic, looks very old and the metal on its exterior has rusted, police said.

"We suspect that someone had put mortar shells in his house and left him on the side of the road after knowing that the police would accuse him of having mortar shells," the deputy superintendent of police said. According to sources, an army bomb squad will soon reach the spot to deal with the mortar shells. The United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA-I) is believed to have used mortar shells against the security forces.

In other news, Khaupam Battalion of Assam Rifles under Spear Corps of Indian Army has arrested 2 rebels of ZUF(J) militant outfit with the help of Manipur Police. The team of Spear Corps has also recovered war-like items from the two rebels. The incident is said to have happened on September 18 at Nunggang in Kangpokbi village of Manipur. Two ZUF(J) rebels are now in the custody of Manipur Police.
