Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton has urged for significant changes to the US immigration system, particularly the H-1B visa program. He expressed strong support for increasing legal immigration, calling it a vital strength for the country.

In an interview with ANI, Bolton highlighted the challenges of US immigration policies. While he acknowledged the urgency of addressing illegal immigration, he pointed out that the legal immigration system remains “completely gridlocked.”

“There’s no doubt that illegal immigration is a serious issue and must be resolved. Trump’s stance on this has gained a lot of support. However, the legal immigration system is another matter--it’s stuck in a deadlock and politically tough to reform,” he stated.

Bolton emphasized the benefits of welcoming more immigrants, noting that the visa system allows skilled individuals to either return to their home countries or seek US citizenship.  They are a source of strength for the United States. The visa program enables people to contribute to the country and choose their future, whether that’s returning home or becoming citizens here," Bolton said.

He highlighted the advantages of the H-1B visa program and called for greater “political determination” to expand legal immigration. He also stressed the importance of organized immigration processes, saying the current system lacks order.

“The H-1B visa program is a positive initiative for the United States. At some point, we need the political will to increase legal immigration. For any sovereign nation, having an organized system is crucial, and we are clearly not doing that at the moment,” he added.

On India-US Relations

Bolton also discussed the growing relationship between India and the US. He described the personal rapport between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former President Donald Trump as a positive dynamic.

He noted that the Biden administration has made strides in strengthening Asian security through the QUAD alliance, which includes India, Japan, Australia, and the US. Bolton expressed hope that Trump would continue to build on this progress.

The Biden administration has worked on enhancing Asian security through the QUAD partnership, and I hope Trump continues this if he returns to office,” Bolton remarked.

Reflecting on his time in the White House, Bolton revealed that conversations between Modi and Trump often revolved around trade. While trade is essential, Bolton emphasized the need to focus on larger strategic issues.

“In the meetings I attended, discussions primarily centered on trade. While trade is undoubtedly significant, there are broader strategic issues where the US and India share common interests. These need to be part of high-level conversations,” he said.

Bolton described the India-US partnership as one of the most strategically important relationships of the 21st century. I hope future discussions expand beyond trade to address broader geopolitical challenges,” he added.
