Panaji: Following the demise of Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Pramod Sawant was chosen as the successor of him. Sawant, who resigned as the Goa Assembly speaker, took oath as the Chief Minister of Goa at a swearing-in ceremony held at Raj Bhavan at 2 am on Tuesday. On stepping into Parrikar’s shoes, Sawant said that he will fulfil his dream.

After the oath-taking ceremony, which was presided by Goa Governor Mridula Sinha and was over in around half-an-hour, a visibly emotional Sawant spoke to reporters. Remembering the departed BJP stalwart, Sawant said, “I have stepped into big shoes. Mr Parrikar had a vision of development for Goa and that is what I will pursue. We will fulfil his dream.” 

Along with Sawant, Goa Forward Party’s Vijai Sardesai and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP)’s Sudin Dhavalikar, also took oath as deputy chief ministers. It is for the first time that the tiniest state of the country will have two deputy CMs.

After death of Parrikar, intense discussions on power-sharing in the state were held between the BJP and its allies for the most part of Monday, which finally resulted in BJP getting its say in choosing it’s CM face but conceding the key posts of Deputy CM to the two allies. 

late Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, who passed away on Sunday evening after a prolonged battle with a pancreatic ailment at the age of 63.
