New Delhi: The long wait for the arrival of monsoon in Delhi is not coming to an end and the people of the national capital are facing the scorching heat in this wait. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday that heavy rain is expected at many places in north India, including Delhi, from Monday, but there will be only a slight respite from the heat and humidity throughout the day as the southwest monsoon has not yet reached the rest of the region.
Strong cold winds in Delhi-NCR on Sunday night have brought some respite from the heat. Delhi also remained low on Monday morning as compared to Sunday. IMD said the southwest monsoon was supposed to hit north India, including Delhi, by July 10, but it did not happen till Sunday evening. Director General of IMD Mrityunjay Mohapatra said that delhi is in favourable conditions for the monsoon to become active as the humidity in the air has increased due to easterly winds. He said the formation of a low pressure area will also speed up the monsoon.
Central Delhi is the district in the country with the lowest rainfall amid the monsoon wait. Central Delhi has received only 8.5 mm of rainfall since June 1, 93 percent less than the normal 125.1 mm. Delhi has received 64 per cent less rainfall so far than normal monsoon rains.
