A torn passport put the weightlifter's hopes of playing in the Tokyo Olympics at stake. Weightlifter Ajay Singh, who is going to play in the Olympic qualifier weightlifting tournament being played in Doha, was not allowed to board the flight due to a torn passport. He had to return back from Indira Gandhi Airport. On Sunday, he was to play in this tournament in the 81 kg weight category. The Wahimbindian Weightlifting Federation selected Olympic contenders Mirabai Chanu, Jeremy Lalrinunga, Rakhi Haladhar and Ajay Singh for the Doha tournament after the South Asian Games withdrew from the Olympic qualifiers. On 19 December 2019, the entire team left to play in this tournament.

According to media reports, immigration also objected to Ajay's passport, but he pleaded to leave citing Olympic qualification and playing for the country. He got his pulse, but when it came to take boarding pass to board the flight, crew members of foreign airlines refused to give him the pass.

When he was asked about this, he made it clear that his passport is not proper, it is torn and due to this, he cannot be allowed to travel. Along with Ajay, the coach and other members of the team also appealed to give him the pass, citing the Olympic qualifiers, but he did not get the pass, due to which the remaining members of the team left for Doha but Ajay had to return. The Federation tried to get his second passport made on Friday, but it was not possible in such a hurry.
