West Bengal Govt scraps Exam for Class 6 to 9

The West Bengal State Government has determined to scrap School-level exams for Class 6 to 9 students this year, due to the unprecedented situation of the pandemic. All students who are part of schools affiliated with the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) will be promoted to the next class sans any exam or evaluation this year, as per media reports.

With the pandemic induced school closures still in force in West Bengal; a major section of students, especially those who come from an underprivileged background, have not been able to continue their studies seamlessly through the online learning model. Considering the situation, the state government has directed school teachers to revise the full syllabus of the previous class before starting the curriculum for next year, as and when regular classes begin. This will help build academic continuity and cohesiveness in the learning processes for Class 6 to 9 students.

In response to this directive, many teachers have expressed that for Class 9 students, who would be moving to Class 10, revision of the complete syllabus would consume a lot of time, leaving only a little time to cover the Class 10 syllabus. As a work-around, school teachers are likely to only hold revision lessons for Class 9 for lessons or chapters of the previous class that may have references in the current curriculum.

Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the state boards i.e. WBBSE and WBCHSE will not be holding selection tests or pre-board exams for students who are due to appear for Madhyamik and Uccha Madhyamik Exams this year. However, the board has allowed schools to hold Mock tests instead to help students prepare for the upcoming board exams 2021.
