West Bengal: Centuries-old tunnel found in house excavation, ASI engaged in investigation

Kolkata: During the construction of a house in East Burdwan district of West Bengal, a centuries-old tunnel has been found while digging the land. The height of the tunnel is ten feet and the width is four feet. Historians call it 200-300 years old tunnel. The district official has said that while laying the foundation of the house on the land of Jiyarul Malik in Mahta village of Bhatar block on Saturday, it has been found in connection with the age-old tunnel, which has a height of seven feet and a width of four feet.

Pranab Kumar Banerjee has told that Jiyarul Malik, a permanent resident of the village, bought this land to build his house. When the excavation was done to lay the foundation of the house, a part of the ground was sunk inside. The matter was immediately conveyed to the District Collectors and the Department of Archeology and Police. Before the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) department reached there, they were given some pictures of the tunnel.

Based on the photographs, the department official has said that this tunnel seems to be 200-300 years old and it would not be appropriate to say anything before a full investigation. Historian Sarabjit Yash said that this tunnel is probably 250-300 years old and some parts of it match the Jain architecture. He told that this tunnel could be of a royal family, which was built during the British rule.
