The International Day of Mathematics (IDM) is a worldwide celebration which is also known as Pi Day, as the first three digits of Pi are 3.14. Each year on March 14 all countries will be invited to participate through activities for both students and the general public in schools, museums, libraries and other spaces.

UNESCO established the day in 2019 to promote the importance of mathematics in our lives, raise awareness of its role in scientific advancements, and inspire young people to pursue mathematics as a career.

Mathematics plays an important role in our daily lives. From calculating your grocery bill to predicting the weather, mathematics is all around us. It helps us understand the world around us and provides us with the tools to solve real-world problems.

March 14 is already celebrated in many countries as Pi Day because that date is written as 3/14 in some countries and the mathematical constant Pi is approximately 3.14. The International Day of Mathematics is a project led by the International Mathematical Union with the support of many international and regional organizations.

Mathematics commonly known as Maths plays a key role in understanding all sorts of subjects like science, music, social studies and art and so on. The study of mathematics aids in improving problem-solving abilities and promotes organisation and logical thought in people.

Mathematics Day is marked to raise awareness about the key role of mathematics. People celebrate this day to realsie how maths is important for developing humanity from the grassroots level.  The aim of Mathematics Day is to recognise and appreciate all that this field of study has to give to both individuals and to the world at large
National Mathematics Day: On the other hand, In honour of the great Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan's birth date, December 22 is recognised as National Mathematics Day each year. He is credited with making significant contributions to mathematical analysis, infinite series, number theory, etc. To honour his contributions and remember him as a math genius, Mathematics Day is observed.

Ramanujan enrolled at Trinity College and was selected as one of the London Mathematical Society's members. He was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society in 1918. Ramanujan was also nominated as the first Indian to be a Trinity College Cambridge fellow member. His works were recognized by British mathematicians like G.H. Hardy, who was spellbound by his knowledge of advanced mathematics.

In 2012, the Ex-Prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh designated this day as National Mathematics Day to pay tribute to the legendary Srinivasa Ramanujan.
