WaBetaInfo first published screenshots of the Dark Mode in the 2.19.82 beta update on Android. It then found further proof in the 2.19.85 beta update, where the appp was found to be working on implementing a dark mode for the status bar. Now, in update 2.19.133, WhatsApp is working to make the App Bar dark.

For the users that really want the Dark Mode feature right now, a good option is to download Android Q beta on their supported devices and simply turn on the native dark mode in the OS which forces all apps on the phone to go dark.
