WASHINGTON: The White House conducted its first Easter Egg Roll in two years on Monday, resuming a long-standing ritual that had been disrupted by the Covid-19 outbreak.

"To all of you, have fun today, and welcome to the White House," US President Joe Biden shouted to a crowd of youngsters and their parents from the Blue Room balcony. On a rainy and chilly day, Biden was joined by his wife, Jill Biden, and two Easter Bunnies, reports said.

He joked, "My duty is to keep it from raining for another two minutes." The Bidens oversaw one of the egg rolls, with the president blowing a whistle and a painted wooden spoon to start the kids running down their lanes.

According to the White House, 30,000 people were expected to attend Monday's celebration on the South Lawn. However, only a few people were seen wearing masks. In the United States, the number of Covid-19 cases has started to grow again, and nearly all of them were caused by the extremely contagious Omicron subvariant BA.2.

On Sunday the White House Covid-19 Response Coordinator, urged Americans to get vaccinated and receive booster shots if they are eligible. "The good news is that our vaccinations are holding up pretty well against BA.2, against all of the Omicron strains, especially if you've been boosted," Jha said on Fox News.
