WHO report reveals  not a single hospital for mental patients in 13 states

New Delhi: WHO has released a report on mental patients. According to its report, the number of mental patients in the country is increasing. Till now around 150 million people are in dire need of treatment. According to the National Health Profile Report of the Union Health Ministry, a shocking disclosure has been made, stating that there is not a single hospital for mental patients in Haryana, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Sikkim, Mizoram and Chhattisgarh.

According to the WHO report, mental illness hospitals exist in 24 states and union territories, but these are much less than required. At the same time, there are only one hospital in 14 major states of Bihar, Odisha, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi etc. The number of states which have more than one such hospital is 10. There are at most 5 such hospitals in West Bengal. There are four hospitals in Gujarat and Maharashtra, three each in Uttar Pradesh and Kerala, and two mental hospital in five states Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir.

Not only this, along with the lack of hospitals across the country, the shortage of psychiatrists has also been revealed. There are only 0.3 psychiatrists per one lakh population. Only 0.06 percent of the total health budget is spent on mental health. The result is that 80 percent of mental patients do not get treatment in the country.
