New Delhi: The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), the apex religious body of the Sikh community, has strongly opposed any move to introduce ballistic helmets for Sikh soldiers. A delegation of SGPC has held a meeting with the chairman of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) to discuss the issue. SGPC delegation has said that any kind of interference in the matter of the identity of Sikhs will not be tolerated. That's why helmets will not be accepted on Sikh soldiers under any circumstances.
Let us tell you that, this comment of SGPC has come amidst reports that the idea is going on to bring ballistic helmets for the safety of Sikh soldiers. SGPC delegation attended the meeting on Friday (February 3) at the NCM office in New Delhi. SGPC general secretary Gurcharan Singh Grewal and member Raghbir Singh Saharan Majra were included in the delegation. Registering a strong objection to the government's alleged proposal to make Sikh soldiers wear helmets before NCM chief Iqbal Singh Lalpura, he said that there cannot be any discussion or argument on this issue.
Let us tell you that SGPC had come into the limelight last year regarding the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee. In fact, in 2014, the Haryana government enacted the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara (Management) Act. Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee was formed under this law. This committee has the legal authority to manage the Gurdwaras. The year this law was enacted, the same year, SGPC member Harbhajan Singh filed a petition in the apex court. In 2019, SGPC also filed a petition. It has been said in the petition that the Haryana government does not have the right to make laws regarding the management of Gurudwaras, because only the Parliament has such power.
