Nationwide strike by IMA to allow Ayurveda doctors to perform surgery

New Delhi: Doctors have gone on strike across the country today against the decision to allow students of Ayurveda to undergo surgery. The strike is being led by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and doctors will be on strike for 12 hours today. However, all non-emergency and non-covid medical services will remain closed during the strike.

What is CCIM's decision?
A notification was issued on November 20 by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) under the Ministry of AYUSH said that doctors in Ayurveda will now be able to perform eye, nose, ear and throat surgeries with general and orthopaedic surgery. A list of 39 General Surgery Procedures was regulated through a notification issued by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) and 19 surgeries related to eyes, ears, nose and throat have been allowed while changing the Indian Medical Central Council (Postgraduate Ayurveda Education) Regulations, 2016.

What is IMA's argument?
The Indian Medical Association has opposed to the same decision and IMA national president Rajan Sharma says that the CCIM order on postgraduate Ayurveda surgical system has been given to legalizing the myopathy (Ayurveda). Ayurveda is still fighting with the challenges of purity and identity.
