New Delhi: The Supreme Court, while hearing on Friday, sought a status report from the UP government in the murder of former Samajwadi Party (SP) MP and mafia Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf. The court asked several questions to the UP government as to why the two were not taken to the hospital in an ambulance and why the police took them on foot till the entrance of the hospital? Also, the court also asked that how did the attackers know that both were being brought to the hospital?

A bench of Justice S Ravindra Bhat and Justice Dipankar Datta also sought a report from the UP government regarding the encounter with the police in Jhansi in which Asad, son of mafia Atiq Ahmed, was killed. Asad was killed in an encounter on 13 April by a team of Special Task Force (SIT) of UP Police. Two days later, Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf were shot dead at close range by three assailants posing as media persons.

According to media reports, during the hearing, the bench questioned the UP government as to how the killers got the information that the Ahmed brothers were being taken to the hospital. The court also asked why the police asked the Ahmed brothers to walk to the entrance of the hospital instead of taking them there in an ambulance. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the UP government, vehemently requested the court not to issue notice saying the state government was probing the two deaths. Rohatgi told the court that, "This man and his entire family were involved in heinous crimes for the last 30 years. It is possible that both were killed by the same people who once faced the wrath of the Ahmed family is one of the ones we are looking into."
