Will EWS reservation end? SC to begin hearing from Sept 13

New Delhi: constitution bench of the Supreme Court will hear on September 13 the issue of 10 per cent reservation for economically backward classes (EWS) in government jobs and educational institutions. A 5-judge bench headed by Chief Justice (CJI) UU Lalit is hearing the case. Senior advocate Gopal Shankar Narayan submitted the draft reservation issue in the apex court. The draft was given to all parties. The apex court said that by Thursday, all the parties should prepare their issues. The Supreme Court will decide on September 8 how to hear the case and in how many days.

A constitution bench comprising CJI UU Lalit, Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, Justice S Ravindra Bhat, Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice JB Pardiwala will hear the matter. On Tuesday, senior advocate Maninder Singh told the apex court that states would be required in the matter. Some states have filed indictment applications, which can be considered. Also, notices can be sent to the states. CJI Lalit said issuing notices could delay the process. But, we cannot stop the state which is here.

At the same time, the Solicitor General said in the top court that you have two cases before you. economic reservation and second religious-based reservation. You can consider issuing short notice. The CJI said that we will go by the order decided. We want to listen to every State. Also, we want to make an assessment of how long it will take if we start the hearing from next Tuesday.
