Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, the major social media companies operating in the country, may face major problems. The Central Government had ordered all social media companies working in the country to follow certain rules and gave 3 months time for the same which is coming to an end on 26th May. According to sources, if these companies have not followed the government's rules so far, the big question is whether Facebook, Twitter and Instagram will be closed after 2 days. Sources also revealed that the Koo the indigenous social media platform has started following the government's rules.

Social media portals in India act like an intermediate and if a person makes objectionable comments or posts on social media, no social media company is prosecuted as they have immunity from the Government of India. But according to sources, the government may end the immunity that Twitter, Facebook and Instagram have received if they do not comply with the government's orders by May 26. If this happens, any user who posts objectionable on the respective social media portal in future may be dealt with on the user as well as the concerned social media site.

State that on 25th February, 2021, social media companies were ordered by the Ministry of Electronics and IT, Government of India to follow certain directions within 3 months and that order was also published in the Gazette of the Government of India. Under the order, social media companies were asked to appoint compliance officers, nodal officers in India and all of them were required to have jurisdiction in India.
