New Delhi: The hopes of thousands of Indian medical students who returned home from Ukraine after the Russian attack has suffered a major setback. In fact, in the absence of a law, these students cannot be given admission in medical colleges of the country. The central government has given this information in its affidavit filed in the Supreme Court. According to this, so far no foreign medical student has been allowed to be transferred or included in any Indian medical institution/university by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
According to the Centre's affidavit, there are medical students of the first to fourth-year batch in foreign medical colleges/universities who are seeking transfer to Indian medical colleges in their respective semesters. As far as such students are concerned, there is no provision for the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 or the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 as well as to induct or transfer medical students from any institution. Further, no such provision exists for shifting from foreign medical institutions/colleges to Indian medical colleges.
It has been said that the NMC has sent a notice to the Ministry of External Affairs for the cooperation of students who have not been able to complete MBBS in Ukraine. It indicated that the commission will accept certificates from students who complete the remaining syllabus in other countries with the approval of Ukraine's parent body.
