Kolkata: More than five decades later, a resolution to form the Legislative Council by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has been passed in the Bengal Assembly. Though all BJP MLAs have opposed the proposal, the proposal has been passed by 196 votes. Now the question is how the proposal will help CM Mamata to save her power as there is talk on social media that West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee may have to resign from the post.
It may be recalled that Tirath Singh Rawat had to resign as cm of Uttarakhand due to lack of by-election. He also did not win from any assembly seat in uttarakhand elections. In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee lost to BJP candidate Shubhendu Adhikari from Nandigram assembly seat by a narrow margin of 2000. On the other hand, uncertainty over the conduct of the by-election in the next 6 months due to the Covid epidemic is putting Mamata and the Trinamool Congress in high apprehension.
With this, concerns have increased for Trinamool and Mamata Banerjee following the recent resignation of CM in Uttarakhand. Therefore, this Legislative Council will not only be beneficial for Mamata but will also be useful to leaders of other TMC like Mukul Roy. However, for the Legislative Council, Mamata Banerjee will also have to pass the proposal in Parliament, which seems somewhat difficult when the Modi government is in place. The question arises whether Mamata will have to step down as CM.
