Bangalore: Karnataka's proposed anti-conversion law may deprive those belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) community of the benefits of the reservation who want to convert to another religion. According to the proposed law, once converted, the state government will identify the person concerned only from his newly adopted religion. However, it is not yet clear whether converts will get the facilities that the minority community gets.
On the other hand, the Scheduled Tribes will continue to get the benefit of reservation even after conversion because they are tribals, not castes. The Law Department is currently in-depth discussing all the points of the Bill. Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai said the state government will introduce the bill in the assembly only after the cabinet's opinion. The session of the Karnataka Assembly began on Monday and will continue for ten days.
