Guwahati: A complete ban on firecrackers was announced on Diwali in Assam. Now, state CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the order was issued without consulting the government. CM Sarma further said, "The Assam Pollution Control Board took suo motu cognizance and issued an order banning the sale of firecrackers completely without consulting the state government and imposed several other restrictions. We have taken cognizance of it.''

CM Sarma further said that the entire matter is being reviewed holistically and public sentiments are also being taken care of. The Assam Pollution Control Board had banned the sale of all types of firecrackers in addition to 'green crackers.' He had said that the decision was taken before Diwali as per the guidelines of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The order said the order would remain in force with immediate effect till further notification is issued.

This meant that firecrackers would be banned on Diwali and Devuthani Gyaras festival. The order was issued citing keeping air pollution under control. PCB Chairman Arup Kumar Mishra had informed that the board has written to all SP and deputy commissioners asking them to comply with the order.
