Minsk: Vigorous protests are taking place across the country against Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko.  More than 300 people were arrested during a protest in the capital Minsk on Saturday demanding the president's resignation. This includes the elderly woman who has been the face of the demonstrations for the past six weeks.

More than 2,000 women were involved in protests against President Alexander Lukashenko, PTI reported. Protests began in Belarus following the Presidential elections on August 9, which still continue. Officials say Lukashenko won the presidential election for the seventh time by gaining 80 per cent of the votes, while opponents and some election activists say the election results have been adulterated. Human rights group Viasana said more than 320 people have died during Saturday's protest.

The detained women include 73 years ago, geologist Nina Bahinskaya, who has become the popular face of the demonstrations. Lukashenko has been in office for the past 26 years. Protesters are demanding the president resign and hold back elections.
