New Delhi: The novel coronavirus variety 'Omicron' has started to have an impact on sports. In a similar spirit, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has announced that the Junior Women's Hockey World Cup would be postponed. It was set to take place from December 5 to 16 in South Africa. The event will not be held under the existing conditions, according to the FIH, the South African Hockey Association, and the North-West University of Potchefstroom.
The virus's new strain has been found in South Africa, raising worries. 'The safety of everyone in FIH contests is the first priority,' stated FIH CEO Thierry Veal in a statement. At the same time, numerous nations, including partners, have tightened their travel restrictions on South Africa. As a result, the tournament cannot be held according to the previously planned timetable.'
The tournament's most recent event took place in Santiago, Chile in 2016. Argentina won the tournament for the second time that year, defeating the Netherlands 4-2 in the final. The Pochefstrum would now be contested by 16 teams. The competition was headed by an 18-member Team India, which included forward Lalremasiami, who was a part of the senior women's team that came fourth at the Tokyo Olympics.
