The 27th of September has been designated as World Tourism Day annually since 1980. On this day in 1970, the Organization's Statutes were adopted for the first time, laying the path for the creation of UNWTO five years later.

The Creation of World Tourism Day:

The UNWTO General Assembly established World Tourism Day, starting in the year 1980, at its third session, held in Torremolinos, Spain, in September 1979. This day was chosen to fall on the anniversary of the ratification of the UNWTO Statutes on September 27, 1970, a significant turning point in international tourism.

The fact that World Tourism Day falls at the conclusion of the peak travel season in the northern hemisphere and the start of the season in the southern hemisphere makes its timing particularly suited.

World Tourism Day 2022:

World Tourism Day is back to highlight the future of tourism. The UNWTO will emphasise the chance to reconsider how we conduct tourism as the industry begins to recover and builds on unparalleled political and popular acclaim for the sector. This entails prioritising the well-being of people and the environment and uniting everyone, from local communities to enterprises, under a common vision for a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable industry.

History:

World Tourism Day was declared in 1980 after being selected by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in 1979. The date of September 27th was chosen because it is the anniversary of the establishment of the UNWTO Statutes in 1970. Five years later, in 1975, the UNWTO has founded thanks in part to these Statutes. Since 1980, September 27 has been designated as World Tourism Day in all countries.
