World Water Day is an annual United Nations Observance Day (March 22) that highlights the importance of freshwater. The day is used to advocate the sustainable management of freshwater resources. The theme of each day focuses on topics related to clean water, and sanitation which is in line with the goals of Sustainable Development Goals 6. The United Nations World Water Development Report (WWDR) is released around World Water Day every year.

UN-Water is the convenor of World Water Day and selects the theme for each year in consultation with UN organizations who share an interest in that year's focus.  The theme of 2020 is "Water and Climate Change" and explores how the two issues are unwaveringly linked. Due to the Covid-19 epidemic, the 2020 campaign also promoted messages of handwashing and hygiene and guided them to stay safe while supporting the campaign.

World Water Day is celebrated with a variety of programs around the world. These can be dramatic, musical, or lobbying in nature. The day may also include campaigns to raise funds for water projects. The first World Water Day, designated by the United Nations, was celebrated in 1993.
