The UN World Wildlife Day is observed on March 3rd each year as a day to honour wildlife. Given that CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, was signed on this day in 1973, it was chosen as the anniversary.

World Wildlife Day will be observed worldwide on March 3 to raise awareness of the impact that biodiversity has on all species on Earth. "Partnerships for Wildlife Protection" is the theme for this year.

In 2023, World Wildlife Day coincides with the 50th anniversary of the creation of CITES.

CITES has been at the nexus of trade and conservation since its creation. It has made an effort to foster relationships and eliminate conflict among the various organisations that follow and are regulated by its rules.

Theme of World Wildlife Day 2023 is "Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation"

World Wildlife Day 2023 recognises the important contribution CITES has made to sustainability, the conservation of wildlife, and biodiversity, as well as how this contribution has been strengthened through the cooperation and bridge-building work done inside the CITES framework. It also acknowledges the ways in which CITES has collaborated and partnered with other conventions, UN agencies, and other groups in support of bigger UN objectives including the Post-2020 Framework on Biodiversity and the Sustainable Development Goals (which has just been adopted at CBD CoP15 in Montreal in December).

The campaign for conservation, the sustainable use of wildlife, and the fight against illegal trade and the extinction of wildlife has mobilised UN agencies, businesses, philanthropies, and non-governmental group.

Events and activities are taken place globally to promote the conservation of wildlife and their habitats, including educational programs, community-based projects, and advocacy campaigns. The aim is to promote persona and organizations to take action to protect and conserve wildlife and their habitats for future generations.
